Montrose coach Todd Smith tried to warn his team about GAR’s quickness prior to Tuesday night’s Class AA quarterfinal at Carbondale on Tuesday night.

Still, the Grenadiers were able to use their speed to their advantage, especially on defense, as GAR topped the Meteors 63-55 to bump Montrose from the playoffs.
Alan Charles’ 3-pointer 66 seconds into the game gave Montrose its only lead. The Meteors missed their next six shots and GAR scored 11 straight points. For the rest of the game, Montrose was forced to play catch-up.
At the end of the first, GAR led Montrose 14-7, and took a 28-18 lead into halftime.
After halftime, the Grenadiers topped the Meteors 17-15 in the third quarter, and finished off the upset with a high-scoring 23-22 fourth quarter.
Montrose was led by Bill Stranburg who nailed three 3’s and ended up with 17 points, while Rob Volk had 14 points and Alan Charles put in 10, including three 3-pointers.
Montrose ends its season with a 22-4 overall record.
