The ink was barely dry from his being hired June 8 as the new field hockey coach at Montrose Area, but the school board this Monday regretfully accepted the resignation of Jason Young.

Superintendent Michael Ognosky shared that Young, who had been hired at an annual stipend of $3,255, had acknowledged in a letter of resignation this week that there arose a conflict in a corporate training exercise he would need in his regular work and getting students ready for the upcoming season.

The board also accepted the resignations of Curtis Keihl as assistant football coach, Mary Gesford as assistant junior high field hockey coach, and Sandra DeLousia as Color Guard for the Marching Band.

Eight members of the Montrose Area professional staff were granted tenure: Kim Fruehan, Alicia Nolt, Katy Rosenkrans, April Jones, Sarah Brander, Sean Castellani, Daniel Cherney and Laura Griffith.

The board also appointed Karen Ricci as the Elementary Primary Level Language Arts Coach for the next two school years. According to discussion, the coaching position was to address “response intervention areas” and insure “more consistency across all grade levels” of language arts instruction.

While Ricci’s regular salary was already provided for by the school, the funds for a coach would come under a Title 1 economic stimulus grant, Ognosky said.

The school board also approved expenditures of monies regarding its 2009 summer day camp, including the hiring of Glenna Tennat as a bus contractor for four days a week between July 7 and Aug. 13 at the rate of $150 per day.

An audience member questioned how the public was apprised of such attractive job offers.

Ognosky said the rate of pay was the same as the year before and was being paid out of a 21st Century Community Grant that was about to expire.

Betsy Groover was also appointed as nurse of the Summer Day Camp at Choconut Valley Elementary School at a contracted rate of $29.96 per hour for a maximum of six hours per day, four days a week across a 9-week period.

Six individuals were appointed as Summer Day Camp Counselors at a rate of $10 per hour, for a maximum of six hours a day, four days a week across a 9-week period: Heather Jurchak, Eric Lloyd, Katie Homan, Sarah Gould, Carin Hoppe and Bridget McNamara.

Ognosky reiterated that the program was paid through a 21st Century Community Grant.

The next full meeting of the Montrose Area School Board will be Monday, July 13 at 7 p.m. at the Choconut Valley Elementary School faculty room.
