The Montrose Adoption Center will remain open, at least for now.
Corey Cohen, an animal behaviorist at the Montrose facility, said Tuesday morning that the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will provide funding to keep the struggling center open until at least July.
He said that PSPCA more or less granted a stay of execution by next month, “to see if we can prove ourselves. We need to show them that the shelter has support of our community.”
To that end, Cohen said an open house for the shelter is planned for one of the remaining weekends in June, probably June 20.
“We need to show as many adoptions and funds as we can raise to show we are viable,” Cohen said.
He said that donations could be sent to Montrose Adoption Center, P.O. Box 485, Montrose, PA 18801.
The shelter has about 16 dogs and numerous cats, and local residents are concerned about their welfare should the Montrose facility close.
“We want to avoid that,” Cohen said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
