In an election night surprise, two Franklin supervisors resigned from their posts during the Nov. 3 township meeting.
Harvey Rosenkrans and Robert Darrow handed their notice to remaining supervisor Daniel Depue. The resignations were followed by those of township secretary Shirley Smith and auditor Carl Smith.
The resignations were met with applause from some of the meeting attendees.
“All four of us quit,” said Darrow after the meeting adjourned.
“That’s their prerogative,” Jerry Sullivan said regarding the resignations. “The voters of the township have spoken and it’s time for a change. They cast the votes in the Primary and see the outcome today.”
Rosenkrans, who lost in the Primary election to Mark Creamer, would have otherwise ended his term at the end of 2009.
The move effectively shut Franklin down as of Friday, Rosenkrans, Darrow and Shirley Smith’s last day at the township.
Township solicitor Michael Giangrieco on Monday said the residents have gathered signatures on petitions to fill the two supervisor vacancies.
Giangrieco said he hoped to submit the petitions to Susquehanna County President Judge Kenneth Seamans for the appointments to be made by Tuesday.
From there, Depue along with the two appointed supervisors can then move to hire a secretary.
“I’m done. I served my community,” said Rosenkrans. “All of us have brought it from where it was to a better place.”
“I just hope we can move forward,” he continued. “This whole thing might have started with zoning,” adding he thought tensions in the township would cool once the supervisors dropped zoning pursuits. “But people kept digging and grinding,” he said.
Rosenkrans said he was asked by Depue to help train a supervisor. “I think they’ve burnt too many bridges with me,” he said.
