Festivities mark weekend

Parades and fireworks displays herald the Independence Day activities that abound throughout Susquehanna County this long holiday weekend. Make the most of summer and celebrate at these events.

A number of big opportunities get a head start on the holiday Friday.
 
New Milford
At the New Milford Readiness Center, starting around 6 p.m., Steve Azar will be in concert to help raise funds for a Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Fund for Co. B of the 109th.
 
Admission is only $5 to remember the six local guys who gave their all in 2005. And, it all ends with fireworks.
 
Salt Springs
About 10 miles away at Salt Springs State Park, the public is invited to join in a program of All American Patriotic Music, starting at 7 p.m., also on Friday.
 
Raise your voice in song with musicians Charlene Thomson, of Fine Companions, and Rob Siegers, Grassanova, as they perform old-time favorites.
 
Gather around a campfire near the Pavilion, sing along, and learn about how our history is presented in music.
 
Bring chairs or blankets to sit on and marshmallows to toast after the program. Rain or shine.
 
Susquehanna
If you’re into the roar of automobiles to get your juices flowing Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna is also having a fireworks extravaganza, Friday,following racing action, including a 30-lap modified feature.
 
The first 250 youngsters through the gate will receive an American Flag, compliments of Penn Can Speedway. Gates open at 5 p.m.; racing begins at 7:15 p.m. The track is located on Rt. 171, Susquehanna.
 
Thompson
Over in Thompson you can get fireworks on Thursday and Friday night at the Thompson Hose Co. Fourth of July Carnival.
 
Festivities kick-off July 3 at 1 p.m. with DJ Scott Forster; followed by Keystone Jukebox performing from 6-10 pm. Fireworks, sponsored by NEP Telephone at 10 p.m. both nights.
 
Events throughout the carnival include rides and concessions, Big Six, Bingo, Dunk Tank, craft vendors, and beer and clams.
 
The parade steps off at 11:30 a.m. on July 4; followed by a chicken barbeque beginning at noon. DJ Scott Forster starts playing at 1 p.m. and Kabury Lane performs from 6-10 p.m.
 
Montrose
And, of course, don’t forget Montrose when the K-L-R presents ‘The American Dream 4th
 
The Endless Mountain Independence Day races begin with a one-mile fun-run at 7:45 a.m., no registration required.
 
The first 300 5k and 10k registrants receive commemorative shirts. Awards will be presented to men and women competing in several age groups. Timing and results are handled by the Triple Cities Runners Club.
 
Fuel up for the busy day in Montrose with a breakfast buffet, 7:30-10:30 a.m., at the Montrose United Methodist Church, 90 Church St. All you can eat. Pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, yogurt and much more.
 
More than 130 arts and craft exhibitors, along with food and beverage vendors, will be set up on the Green starting at 8 a.m. Chicken barbecue begins serving at 10 a.m.
 
The Patriotic Parade steps-off at 11 a.m, and features floats decorated to depict the ‘American Dream’ theme. Grand marshals for the celebration will be the Area P Special Olympians. Dr. Paul B. Kerr will serve as the parade’s honorary Grand Marshal.
 
Festivities in Montrose conclude with a giant fireworks display at dusk, on the Montrose Area High School grounds. The fireworks are presented by the Montrose Chamber of Commerce.
 
South Montrose
And, then for those who want their fireweorks to take the form of a ‘real’ protest, there’s a TEA Party Rally, 2 p.m., Saturday, July 4, at the Danny Crisman Memorial Park, Ridge Road, South Montrose.
 
The rally has been organized by a group of citizens from the Montrose area who have issues with the way the country is moving.
