Callie Curley, 14, an eighth-grader at MontroseAreaJunior High School, has been selected as SusquehannaCounty’s first weekly winner of the “Discovering Tomorrow’s Leaders” contest, a partnership among Chesapeake Energy Corp., the 4-H Club, the Rotary Club, GEM 104 FM and the Susquehanna County Independent & Weekender.
Nominated by 4-H leaders LouAnn Kiefer and Michelle Kovaleski, Callie also got a big vote from Dan Cherney, her eighth grade geography teacher who called her “an amazing student. We have some very good students here but she’s at the top in everything she does.”
Callie has been involved with the Dimock/Elk Lake/Springville (DES) 4-H Club for six years. She has been part of the 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team for the past two years, and was named captain this year. Callie served as 4-H Club secretary in 2009 and as a team leader at the 4-H dairy camp last year.
She is a Dairy Ambassador on the Susquehanna County Dairy Promotions Court and last Friday durin the 21st Dairy Day activity at ElkLake, she was alternatively dishing up ice cream cones and showing off pies during the Pie Auction.
She’s apparently a good baker as her blackberry pie fetched $100 the second highes bid of the day.
Callie is also active in the Montrose High School Marching Band, the Girls Scouts, and the United Fire Co.
“Discovering Tomorrow’s Leaders” gives residents the opportunity to nominate SusquehannaCounty students who have displayed outstanding leadership qualities within the 4-H Club.
One young leader, nominated by the community, will be selected each week for eight consecutive weeks through April. A computer will be donated to each winner’s school. At the end of eight weeks, two lucky winners will be selected from all honorees to win a personal laptop computer.
